SPECIAL AWARDS

All candidates will be screened for consideration for a special award. Candidates being considered for a special award must meet the general Hord Foundation Criteria and the specific criteria of the donor organization. Please review award criteria and check those you believe you qualify for and wish to be considered for.

Hord Foundation Overall Excellence Award*

  • academic excellence
  • demonstrated excellent character
  • dedication to serving others

Cora E. Hord Education Award*

  • pursuing a career in education
  • demonstrated achievement
  • demonstrated academic accomplishment

Jesse and Noel Hord Award*

  • study in human services, social services or education
  • strong academic record
  • previously involved in community services or church activites

Lila Leopold Community Service Award*

  • study in human or social services
  • demonstrated community service

Dr. Fred G. Adams Award*

  • study in the humanities, medicine or allied health field
  • good character
  • demonstrated leadership
  • strong academic achievement

Batson Award

  • evidence of above average grade point
  • early childhood education or similar program of study
  • others, as noted in the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Criteria

Concerned Black Men for Youth Award

  • Black male
  • show improvement due to having been tutored by a CBMAY member

Connecticut Light & Power, Inc. Award

  • career in an energy related profession (engineering, environmental studies, mathematics, or the physical sciences)

Correll/Nunn-Better Award

  • possess a history of academic excellence
  • commitment to social justice and equality as demonstrated through involvement in school and/or community

Danbury Guardians Association, Inc. Award

  • Danbury area students only
  • career in criminal justice and administration of law (police, courts or corrections)

Danbury Health Services Award

  • demonstrated interest in health care professions by acceptance at 2 or 4 year college or university in a program leading to certification, licensure, registration or other qualification to perform in an allied health field (field incluldes radiology, respiratory therapy, physical clinical laboratory, medical records, clinical dietitian, dental hygiene, biomedical engineering, psychology, social work, dentistry and medicine
  • spirit of service to others
  • academic proficiency (mathematics and science)
  • preference to students attending in-state institutions with an expectation to work in the Danbury area.

Duracell/Gillette Award

  • study in business/economics
  • "B" average
  • held financial office in school, community or business organization

Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc. Award

  • demonstrated talent in the arts
  • desire to work towards the use of this skill in the photo technological industry

Humanitarian Award

  • acceptance to a 4-year college
  • received above-average grades
  • demonstrates financial need

Kappa Alpha Psi Award

  • Black male high school student with a minimum of a “B” average
    demonstrate need and has contributed significantly to the community

Jennie Bryant Temple #1187/Carter L. Marshall Lodge #1556 Award

  • career in teaching
  • "B" average
  • involved in church and community

Lalo Burgos Award

  • student pursuing a degree in humanities
  • commitment to social justice
  • demonstrated leadership

The LINKS Award

  • 4 year college
  • study of the arts (arts performance, history or education)

Martin Muschett Award

  • career in the music profession

MCCA

  • study in social work, psychology or a related field that trains students in the psychological or mental health sciences

Myrna Turner Award

  • pursuing a secondary or post-secondary degree at a historically Black college or university
  • maintained a minimum 3.5 grade point average for the previous academic year
  • demonstrates financial need

News-Times Award

  • The News-Times Award is offered to assist students interested in careers in journalism or communication
  • Tannenbaum Awards – Dollars for Scholars
  • award offered through the Dollars for Scholars to Black collegians
  • demonstrate academic success, need and service to their school or community

Union Savings Bank Award

  • demonstrated an interest in banking or finance professions
  • accepted at a two year or four year college or university in a program
    program leading to certification, licensure, registration or other qualification to perform in a business field, such as, accounting, business administration, economics finance, marketing or management
  • demonstrate spirit of service to others, and academic proficiency
